Football

Went to a local soccer game last week. Mark’s son Emmanuel took us. Emmanuel is a Rwandan boy that Mark has unofficially adopted. It was APR (Armée Patriotique de Rwanda - Rwandan Patriotic Army) vs Rayon Sport (Nyanza). "Meet the Tough boys of Rwanda" one APR T-shirt proudly proclaimed! Around ten thousand people filled the stadium, final score was 1-1. Awesome atmosphere, traditional Rwandan music preceded the game, which itself was a privelege to attend. Most Rwandans could not afford it and many people climbed trees/hills/houses outside the stadium to get a view of the game.

This game was the first time we saw other ‘white-people’ or ‘muzungus’ - two to be exact. In Rwanda we are referred to as ‘muzungus’ and this is certainly not an uncommon word to be heard during a day at school or in town. Almost all kids will point and yell ‘muzungu’ when seeing the three Australians in a remote Rwandan village - needless to say we are quite the novelty here.
